Wireless doorbells can enhance your convenience, security, and overall quality of life. However, not all wireless doorbells are created equal. Getting one of the best wireless doorbells on the market will have many more benefits than simply buying the first product you see.
In addition to in depth reviews of wireless doorbells available right now, this buyer’s guide features simple explanations of the specs and features that determine whether a wireless doorbell is merely average or extremely good.
Best Wireless Doorbells 2019
Reading this guide can save you money and bring you all the great benefits and features that wireless doorbells have to offer by helping you get the right product the first time.
|Ring WiFi Enabled Video Doorbell||4/5|
|INNLIFE Waterproof Chime Kit||4.2/5|
|Bodyguard Wireless Doorbell||4.5/5|
|CROSSPOINT Expandable Wireless Doorbell||4.8/5|
Even the best wireless doorbells are not all alike. A big part of making a satisfying purchase is getting a doorbell with the features you crave–and you can save money by opting out of the features you don’t care about.
That’s why it’s important to understand the key features of wireless doorbells, such as their connectivity and other capabilities, in addition to objective qualities like durability.
Ring WiFi Enabled Video Doorbell – best wireless doorbells with camera
Ring is one of the premier brands when it comes to wireless doorbells with video capability. They offer an entire line of home security products that all work together, but their WiFi video doorbell is always at the heart of it.
As one of the brands with the most buzz in the world of wireless doorbells, they’ve gotten a lot of eager customers. However, their system is not completely perfect–in my experience, almost nothing is. Let’s take an honest look at the pros and cons of the Ring WiFi video doorbell.
Let’s start with the good. Ring offers their product in four different finishes so it can seamlessly match the exterior of your home, and it looks great in every color. It’s subtle enough that you won’t notice it from far away, but quite noticeable up close, which can act as a deterrent to package thieves, burglars, and nosy neighbors alike.
The video quality is also quite good, and you can view video and chat with anyone at your door on virtually any device, as Ring is compatible with both Android and Apple phones as well as Windows and iOS computers. On top of that, the sound quality is great across the board.
In addition, the product is greatly expandable with Ring’s line of companion products. These include chimes that you can mount throughout your home so that you can get alerts when you’re not near your phone, as well as outdoor security cameras.
However, this video doorbell doesn’t do quite as well when it comes to integrating into other home security systems. If you have security cameras from another brand, you won’t be able to store and view your videos in the same place.
This brings me to what is in my mind the biggest flaw of the product. While it comes with a 30 day free trial, Ring is a paid service. It’s quite affordable, and includes an off site cloud backup of all video recorded so that you won’t lose video ever. However, I do wish there was a way to physically store the video without paying for cloud storage.
That being said, the service does provide a lot of added bonuses, and on top of that the customer support at Ring is great with warranty, troubleshooting, and security in general.
Additionally, there are some other key features. For example, this unit can be hardwired into your original doorbell if you choose, meaning that the original doorbell will ring inside the house, and you’ll still get a Ring alert and the ability to talk to anyone on the other side of the door on your phone.
There is also a huge library of different chime sounds available, ranging from a charming xylophone sound not too different from the gentler iPhone alarm sounds to a barking dog that can serve as a great deterrent to anyone with bad intentions. The company behind Ring also consistently updates the archive of chime sounds, meaning you can almost certainly find something to suit your needs and your taste.
On top of that, there’s one more wonderful security feature. While some other video doorbells only activate when someone chooses to press the bell, Ring’s unit is motion activated. That can help with catching video of package thieves as well as deterring them.
The product is also very easy to install. However, its range is only as good as the range of your WiFi router. While this won’t be a problem for anyone with an apartment or small home (or anyone whose WiFi router is right by their front door), you may want to look into purchasing a WiFi range extender if you own a very large home or are looking into getting other Ring security products.
All in all, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great video doorbell with plenty of security features. While it certainly makes life more convenient, it’s ultimately designed to help protect your home and provide you with peace of mind.
I’d also recommend it to anyone who has yet to purchase a complete home security system, as Ring offers a wide array of security products that are all compatible with one another. That being said, if you already have a home security system made by another brand, this might not be the best choice for you.
- Video capability greatly increases both convenience and security benefits of this wireless doorbell
- Available in four tones and with an ever expanding variety of chimes, so it’s sure to suit a wide variety of tastes
- Plenty of security enhancement features such as motion activation, deterrent sounds, and possibility of integrating with other Ring security products such as Stick Up Cameras
- Extremely easy to install and use
- Compatible with virtually any operating system and able to be connected to multiple devices at once: phones, tablets, PCs, and desktops
- Paid cloud storage subscription required if you plan to store video beyond the 30 day trial
- Not very compatible with other home security systems in terms of recording video and general integration
Only alerts you via phone, unless you wire it into an existing doorbell or purchase a separate Ring chime for indoors
Innlife – Best Waterproof Wireless Doorbell Chime Kit
This wireless doorbell kit from new player Innlife seeks to bring together the best of both the good old days of extremely simple doorbell operation and the newest and most exciting sonic features in the world of doorbells.
One of the most innovative key features of this unit is its extremely long operating range of up to 1,000 feet. This is great for those of you with large homes, as well as for anyone who lives in a building with very thick walls.
While this unit doesn’t offer WiFi connectivity or a video feature, that simplifies its operation. Just like a wired doorbell, all a visitor has to do is push the button, and the two receivers inside will ring.
However, this simplicity belies the feature richness of this product. One of my favorite things about it is the wide variety of tones, which will help homeowners and renters everywhere find something suited to their individual tastes. If you think you might want to change the sound of your wireless doorbell quite often, this product just might be the best choice for you.
In addition, the volume of the two receivers is highly adjustable, from extremely soft to extremely loud. On top of that, the receivers both feature bright LED lights–meaning you can use this with no sound at all if you’re hard of hearing or simply don’t like the noise.
The LED light is also great for high noise environments. If you’re a musician or you wear headphones all the time, the light can catch your attention even when the sound does not. This is also great for hosting parties–even if the party has already started, you’ll be alerted to open the door for any late arrivals.
One of my favorite features about this kit, though, is its versatility and mobility. Because it comes with two receivers that both sound and light up whenever the button on the transmitter is pressed, you can place the receivers at strategic locations throughout the home.
That means you’ll never have to turn up your volume too loud or worry about missing visitors if you’re in a different room.
Also, the receivers don’t have any special requirements. They simply plug into any wall outlets, meaning that can be put in virtually any room and can be moved with no tools or mess at any time. For example, you could keep your receivers in your living room and kitchen while awake and moving around the house, but bring one into the bedroom at night.
One potential downside to this product, though, is that it doesn’t offer much in the way of security features. While some other wireless doorbell products are all about enhancing your home’s security, this one is really just about being a doorbell.
On the other hand, if you have no need for a security system or already have a separate security system for your home, keeping security needs out of the doorbell greatly enhances its ease of use.
This is an extremely easy to use product. The transmitter and receivers are both aesthetically pleasing and unobtrusive. The transmitter features a small image of a bell, letting visitors know what the button is for.
Luckily, it’s also very easy to set up. Because the transmitter is battery operated and the receivers simply plug into the wall, setup is almost as simple as plugging in your toaster and putting fresh batteries in your remote. Even better, the battery is included with the kit.
The kit also includes the screws necessary to hard mount the transmitter outside, which is great for homeowners. However, for any renters or anyone who doesn’t have the technical know how to do this, it’s also light enough to easily and securely attach with mounting tape alone.
- Extremely easy to install and use
- Both the transmitter and the receivers are nice looking and made of quality materials, but also unobtrusive
- This kit features a wide array of chime sounds, so you’re sure to find something to suit your taste (or try something new every day!)
- The dual receivers are extremely easy to use, and the volume is adjustable from extremely soft to extremely loud, meaning that this kit is easily adaptable to virtually any situation
- Both receivers feature an LED light to alert you to packages or visitors even when you can’t hear the chime
- Includes battery and mounting materials, and all at a very low price
- Does not rely on WiFi and offers an operating range of up to a surprising 1,000 feet
- Is not rich with security features, though this won’t be a problem for those of you who either don’t need a security system or already have a separate security system from your doorbell
- Does not allow for communication with anyone on the other side of the door
Honeywell RCWL330A1000 – BestPortable Wireless Doorbell
Honeywell is one of the oldest and most respected names in the world of home appliances and electronics. Chances are if you have a traditional doorbell, it just might be a Honeywell, and they’re also known for their electric heaters and other small appliances.
One of their premier wireless doorbell models, the RCWL330A1000/N, offers a lot in terms of both convenience and security features, and is also designed to be expandable–all at a bargain of a price.
Specifically, purchasing this unit gets you one transmitter (doorbell) and one receiver (chime), which communicate wirelessly with a range of up to 450 feet. However, what really shines about this unit to me is its potential for expandability.
In addition to purchasing additional doorbells and chimes, there are other accessories you can get for this product, such as motion sensors that will alert you to anyone’s presence at your door or in your yard. This is an excellent security feature.
However, if you plan to expand this system, do your research and ensure that any motion detectors or chimes you get are compatible with this model. Generally speaking, other Honeywell models with identifying numbers ending in the same /N are the most compatible.
Another cool feature that the chime portion of this unit offers is its visual alerts. Instead of simply shining an LED light when the bell is rung, the chime offers multiple LED lights, each of which can correspond to a different transmitter. This is great because it allows you to know which door guests are waiting at, as well as where packages have been left.
Because of this customizability, this is one of my favorite units to recommend for professional use as well as home security and convenience. It’s great for offices, warehouses, and the like because it can alert business owners and workers not just to the arrival of shipments and customers, but to where exactly they are.
Despite all its customization options, the unit is also extremely easy to use and to set up. Simply mount the bell outside and put the chime wherever you’d like, and the unit will go to work.
Additionally, because the unit is battery operated, the chime is more portable than many similar products on the market. On top of that, the transmitter can be extended to work with virtually any chime–meaning if you already have a wireless doorbell system and your transmitter has gone bad, this can be a great replacement model.
It’s also one of the loudest wireless doorbells on the market. Of course, the volume is adjustable, so you won’t have to deal with an exceptionally loud bell if you don’t want to, but because of its volume capabilities and CD quality sound, this may be a great choice for those of you who have had trouble hearing other wireless doorbell chimes.
Additionally, the unit offers a sleek look and intuitive user interface. While some other models either try to look just like traditional doorbells or have an almost science fiction futuristic look, this unit blends the best of both worlds by looking like a serious piece of technology but still remaining neutral enough to integrate itself into the existing style of your home.
However, it’s best to remember that nothing is perfect. While I’m really impressed with this unit overall, there are some improvements I would like to see in future models from this well known and widely respected manufacturer.
First and foremost among my issues with the unit are its lack of communication features. While I understand every unit can’t be a video doorbell, I do wish there was at least the option of wireless audio communication. This unit seems to have a lot going on in terms of tech to function just like a traditional doorbell.
Additionally, I wish the operating range was a little larger. While the range can be expanded, the base unit is only operable at a range of 450 feet. This shouldn’t be a problem for most homeowners, but for homeowners with more than 2 levels in their homes or very high square footage, it could cause problems.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an affordable but respectable and stable wireless doorbell option that offers both security and convenience, along with a lot of expandability features.
I’d also particularly recommend it to business owners or to homeowners who use multiple exterior doors in their home fairly often. It can also be great for roommates, as each roommate could have their own doorbell.
- Easy and affordable to expand with additional chimes and transmitters, as well as motion detectors, that all work together seamlessly
- Self-learning transmitter and receiver become highly attuned to one another, which reduces interference by a great deal and ensures you’ll hear a chime every time the transmitter button is pushed
- Highly customizable system allows for a variety of chime tones and LED alerts, including different LED alerts for different transmitters at different doors–meaning you’ll always know where your guests, customers, and packages are waiting
- Extremely easy to install and highly portable due to battery powered operation
- While the expandability features are really cool and convenient, they do require an investment of a little more time and money–however, with every unit in this series available at a fair price and very easy to install, it shouldn’t create too much of a hassle
- Does not offer as many unique chime tones as some comparable units, meaning it may be more challenging to find a chime that suits your taste
- Does not allow communication with anyone on the other side of the door
Bodyguard Wireless Doorbell Kit
This wireless doorbell kit, featuring both a transmitter that’s extremely safe for outdoor mounting and two receivers that can be placed anywhere there’s an electrical outlet, is one of the simplest and yet most versatile wireless doorbells on the market.
However, it’s not just versatility that this particular product has to offer. Its transmitter is also especially durable among wireless doorbells, with an impressive range of operating temperatures–and waterproofing to boot.
The doorbell operates with no problems anywhere between negative 7 and 146 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning it’s safe for virtually any climate–even when mounted in direct sunlight. On top of that, the button itself boasts some serious toughness, being certified for up to 100,000 individual clicks before failure.
When it comes to wireless doorbells, though, it’s not just about their durability. It’s about the auditory aspect as well. Luckily, this product delivers on that front, too.
With 36 different chime tones to suit the ears of almost anyone, and an impressive volume range from 20 to 80 decibels, the product can be made easy and pleasant to hear for just about anyone. It also offers alerts via LED, which is helpful for anyone who’s hard of hearing, or whenever you’re in a high noise environment or have headphones in.
One more thing this unit offers is extremely simple installation. The receivers can simply be plugged in to any existing wall outlets–which also makes them easy to move around the home–and the transmitter can be mounted anywhere near the door with either the included mounting hardware or with exterior mounting tape.
Because of the unit’s extreme durability, it can withstand temperatures and other effects of the elements virtually anywhere, even in direct sunlight. This is true in all but the very hottest and coldest climates on Earth. Additionally, mounting hardware being included in the kit means you won’t need to make a dash to the hardware store when your package arrives.
All in all, this kit has a ton to offer–but it’s not a security apparatus. With no video or voice communication features, it does not allow you to talk with the person on the other side of the door, and because it does not connect to WiFi, it also does not alert you by phone or other electronic device when the doorbell is rung.
Essentially, this doorbell is meant to function just like traditional doorbells, but without all the hassle, and with a lot more customization.
However, the lack of security features can actually be perceived as an advantage. If you have an existing home security system, you won’t need to worry about integrating this wireless doorbell kit into that system. Additionally, the unit’s lack of WiFi connectivity lowers its power consumption while increasing its operable range at the same time.
I would recommend this kit to anyone who either already has a home security system or does not need one, because its focus on a single, simple function allows for a lot more versatility than you’ll find with systems that need to do more. It’s also quite affordable while still retaining high quality, making it a great budget option.
Because of the product’s highly adjustable volume and LED alerts, as well as its additional engineering with safety in mind, I would also recommend it to anyone caring for children, the elderly, or people with hearing disabilities.
It’s also very easy to set up, so it’s a great choice for those of you who either aren’t very handy or who need to get one of the best wireless doorbells on the market today installed as quickly as possible.
- Extremely simple installation with either included screws or outdoor approved mounting tape–you can be set up in minutes
- This kit includes a battery with a life of up to three years, giving you peace of mind and plenty of time to get a replacement battery with no lapse in functionality
- The transmitter is certified for a wide range of operating temperatures from negative 7 to 146 (F), as well as being waterproof–making it perfect for outdoor use
- Offers an astonishing operating range of up to 1,000 feet, which makes it perfect for homeowners with large houses
- Both receivers feature 36 unique chime tones, as well as an LED light effect to alert you even when the doorbell is inaudible
- Highly adjustable volume and dual receivers make this system easy to hear in virtually any room and any circumstance
- Lower power consumption overall means a lower electric bill and less of a negative impact on the environment
- Does not offer the same communication or security features that some WiFi enabled wireless doorbells do
Crosspoint Expandable Wireless Doorbell Alert System
This complete kit from newer but highly respected brand Crosspoint may come with the most components of any wireless doorbell base kit out there–but don’t worry, it’s not any more complicated to set up.
While many of the best wireless doorbells’ base kits come with at least a transmitter and receiver, and some come packed with two receivers, this kit includes both two receivers and two transmitters, which makes it a slightly better value, especially for those of you with multi-entrance homes.
One of my favorite things about the Crosspoint system, though, is how expandable it is. While this base kit comes with quite a lot, there are also multiple add ons that can be had at a great price, including both motion sensors and door sensors.
Best of all, the system is totally customizable. You can either have all the transmitters “ring” all the receivers, or pair transmitters and receivers separately. In addition, you can set different tones for each doorbell transmitter, as well as for each motion or door sensor you add on to the base kit.
There are a wide variety of tones as well, and the company even lets you listen to all of the tones in advance, meaning you’re sure to find something that suits your tastes and your needs. The selection of tones is diverse as well, ranging from loud alarm sounds for door sensors to quiet, refreshing tones and fun songs for doorbells, and everything in between.
On top of that, the volume is highly adjustable. In addition to being one of the loudest systems on the market, it can also be adjusted lower to suit your comfort needs.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this base kit to anyone looking for a great, complete wireless doorbell system (especially for a home or business with multiple entrances) at a great value. However, there are a few flaws I should note as well.
First and foremost among these is the lack of communication features. With a system this advanced and highly customizable, I would expect the ability to communicate with the individual on the other side of the door to be included.
That being said, the kit is available at such a low price that it’s not a huge deal to me that this feature isn’t included. In addition, the unit’s simple setup makes it easy to integrate into the preexisting security and communication apparatus already present in your home.
I also wish that Crosspoint offered its products in a wider variety of colors. While the three colors available (beige, white, and black) all look great and can certainly match with any home and any sense of style, I wish there was a silver or chrome option to match my door’s knob and other hardware.
On the other hand, the exterior of this system is just as impressive as everything going inside. With a waterproof rating of IP68 on both included transmitters, I don’t have to worry about rain or even snow, and the device will work in a quite impressive temperature range as well.
Of course, it’s always worth caring for your unit well and not testing its extremes, as I noted in the buyer’s guide. However, it can bring you a lot of peace of mind knowing that every single part of this wireless doorbell kit was built to last, even in very tough conditions.
- Highly expandable system, making it great for multi-entrance homes, business uses, and shared living spaces
- Comes with two transmitters as well as two receivers, making it a better value and a more versatile system overall
- Seriously impressive operating range of 1,000 feet
- A wide variety of add-on security features including both motion sensors and door sensors
- Extremely durable, highly waterproof, and weather resistant system with a water resistance rating of IP68
- Surprisingly simple setup and installation with intuitive controls featured on the receivers and mounting tape and hardware included for both transmitters, meaning you can pick the mounting option you prefer most
- Does not allow direct communication with the person on the other side of the door
- The more security-focused features of this wireless doorbell system are sold separately–though they’re priced quite fairly, so this isn’t at all a dealbreaker in my book
- Not available in as wide a variety of colors as some of the other wireless doorbells I’ve reviewed
I hope this article has helped you learn more about all the impressive things wireless doorbells can do to enhance your security and quality of life. I’ll spend this section explaining some of the most common features in the top wireless doorbell packages available today, and let you know how they work and who they’re good for.
Video (and Other Visual Features)
Video capability is a recent phenomenon in the world of wireless doorbells. It’s a great feature that can enhance your convenience and security, but because it’s so new and involves the transmission of a lot of data, it’s also a premium feature that can be a bit costly.
Are the benefits worth the extra expense? Depending on your preferences and needs, they just might be. Here are a few of the major benefits of wireless doorbells with a video feature:
- Wireless doorbells with video capability allow you to “answer the door” even when you’re not at home.
- If you’re busy or frightened, or you just don’t feel like going to the door, you can both see and converse with the person on the other side of the door from anywhere in your house as well.
Video capability in wireless doorbells is primarily thought of as a security feature. Being able to answer the door when you’re at the office or even out of the country is obviously a great way to deter would-be thieves.
However, this feature also brings a lot of convenience related benefits. For example, they’re great if you have children or are expecting packages while you’re away, because you can relay instructions to anyone at your door from your phone.
They also enhance your convenience and security while you’re in the home, because you can answer from anywhere in the house rather than going to the door.
Additionally, video doorbells are great for people with hearing problems. However, if you can’t afford a wireless doorbell with video or don’t want to bother with another complex feature, there are other visual features that can help the deaf and hard of hearing.
For example, many wireless doorbells have a light that will shine when the doorbell is rung. This is great for those of you who have hearing problems or care for someone who does, because it alerts the homeowner even if they don’t hear the bell.
Even if you don’t have hearing problems, the light can be handy if you have your headphones in or are in a crowded room.
While video and other visual features are great, it’s transmitting sound that wireless doorbells are primarily known for. Of course, one of the great advantages of digital technology over traditional doorbells is that you can customize your sound.
However, wireless doorbells don’t come with an infinite variety of chime sounds. Looking at the chime sounds offered, and maybe even looking up videos of these sounds online, can help you make sure you want the right choice.
While old-fashioned doorbells were often either too loud or too quiet, wireless doorbells allow you to choose the best sound for you: one that will catch your attention but isn’t too abrasive or annoying.
The operating range of your wireless doorbell kit is an important factor to consider, especially if you have a very large home or a house with multiple levels.
This is one of the areas where wireless doorbells that don’t rely on WiFi actually have an advantage. However, WiFi doorbells tend to be more feature rich. If you want a video doorbell or some other wireless doorbell set that relies on WiFi, you might consider getting a WiFi range extender along with your wireless doorbell kit.
Caring for Your Wireless Doorbell
Last but not least, let’s look at how to properly maintain your wireless doorbell after you’ve purchased it.
First things first: be sure to follow all instructions when setting up your wireless doorbell. While I can give you plenty of good advice, every wireless doorbell is different, so be sure to take a look at the owner’s manual and any other reading material the manufacturer provides.
Of course, setting up your wireless doorbell kit is only a small part of maintaining it. You’ll also need to keep it protected from the elements.
While the portions of a wireless doorbell kit that go outdoors are designed to handle a bit more exposure to the elements than conventional electronics, keeping them maintained and protected is still important.
One of the best ways to protect your outdoor components is to mount them in a protected area, such as on a porch or under an overhang or awning.
Of course, you’ll also need to regularly clean your devices with a strong but non-harmful cleanser, and inspect all components (especially those that go outside) for damage regularly. Personally, I always check mine before going to work on Monday mornings, as well as before and after any business trips or vacations.
Now that you know a bit more about wireless doorbells in general, let’s move on to the product reviews!
